What did AI actually solve?

Sheets canvas gives spreadsheet editors a way to create a custom view that can also change the underlying rows. Start with a small copy of an ordinary task list and check an edit in both views before relying on the generated interface.

01

What changed

Google announced Sheets canvas on August 13, 2026, with the first Workspace rollout beginning August 10. Gemini can generate a custom, interactive interface over a spreadsheet from a description. The resulting canvas stays inside Sheets and shares its underlying data.

The material addition is editing through that generated view. A chart can display a task list; a canvas can provide cards that change the list when you move them. Google documents adding, changing and deleting source data through the canvas, alongside updates flowing from the source sheet back to the view.

02

What this could change for you

A small project list can become a board grouped by task status without building a separate app or writing the interface yourself. The useful test is simple: move a sample task, then inspect its row to see whether the intended field changed. A visual layout is only useful if its edits behave correctly.

The current route is Google Sheets on a computer, in English, using a file stored in Google Drive. Google lists AI Pro and Ultra, Workspace Business Standard and Plus, and Enterprise Standard and Plus among eligible plans. Workspace smart features and Gemini in Sheets must be enabled; creation and editing have per-user usage limits.

Try it yourself

Build a view for a small task list

Google Sheets on a computer, an eligible Google AI or Workspace plan, English, Gemini in Sheets and Workspace smart features enabled, edit access and a standard Sheets file in Google Drive. Use one small source tab.

  1. Make a copy of a simple task list with task and status columns. Open it in Google Sheets on a computer and choose Insert → Create a canvas.
  2. Ask for a board grouped by the status column, with cards that update that same column when moved. Review the generated view and refine the request if needed.
  3. Move one sample task, select View data and check the source row. Also change a sample row and check the canvas; retain the view only if both behave as intended.

What to watch for: This is a suggested check based on current documentation, not a firsthand test. Canvas can edit, add and delete source data; viewers and commenters cannot modify it.

What it does not prove

Current help restricts a canvas to one source tab and does not support source tabs exceeding one million cells. Mobile Sheets, offline documents and files in third-party storage are excluded. A restriction on downloading, copying or printing can also prevent availability.

Canvas inherits the spreadsheet’s access. Editors can change its data; viewers and commenters cannot modify the canvas. It is an interface within Sheets, not a separately deployed app. The official sources establish capability and access, not measured productivity gains or error-free generated behavior.
