This paper studied what happened after consumers adopted Alibaba's Tmall Genie, a voice-activated shopping assistant tied to the company's e-commerce platform. Using consumer-level purchase records and econometric analysis, the authors found that average weekly spending on Alibaba increased 16.6% within the first four months after voice-AI adoption.
The effect was not equally plausible for every kind of purchase. The paper says the gains were stronger where voice reduces information-acquisition costs: repeat purchases, familiar products, and items with close substitutes. That makes the result more believable. A smart speaker is not doing deep comparison shopping. It is making it easier to reorder something you already know.
The channel story is also narrower than a blanket shift to audio commerce. The positive effects on repeat purchases remained significant over the longer run but attenuated over time, and the voice channel showed a positive spillover to PC spending, not to mobile spending. The authors frame this as context-dependent channel complementarity rather than a universal replacement for screens.

A voice assistant can create demand directly, but it can also push some shoppers back to a larger-screen channel where they complete the purchase with more context.
The broader AI lesson is that a lot of consumer value comes from narrowing a decision, not automating the entire experience. This system did not solve product discovery in every category. It reduced friction where the shopper already had enough context to buy without much visual comparison.
What it does not prove
This was one ecosystem: Alibaba's platform and its Tmall Genie device. The result does not prove that Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri, Google Assistant, retailer-specific voice tools, or voice shopping in other countries would produce the same spending changes.
The study is peer-reviewed and based on real purchase behavior, but it is not a randomized rollout. The authors used econometric models on archival adoption data, so the evidence is stronger than a survey and weaker than a field experiment that assigns voice access at random.
Higher spending is not the same thing as better consumer outcomes. The paper does not prove that shoppers got better prices, made better choices, saved money, or felt happier with the experience.
