What did AI actually solve?
Check the camera view, try Blur and keep it only if you like the preview. A less distracting-looking room can be a useful preference without becoming a claim that software has tidied the room or guaranteed privacy.
What changed
A basket of laundry can become an unexpected part of a video conversation. You may prefer a quieter-looking background without rearranging the whole room for a short call. The useful first step is checking what the camera actually sees before deciding whether an effect helps.
Microsoft documents background blur in Teams Free for video meetings and calls. Its desktop instructions place Video effects on the screen before joining; you can select Blur there. This is an existing capability explained as an evergreen guide, not a newly released feature. A separate Microsoft help page identifies backgrounds among the video features that use AI. 01 / Source noteMicrosoft: Add a background or video filter to your Microsoft Teams for personal use meetingOfficial product documentation · Undated help; checked September 2026What the source supportsOfficial product documentation · No independent outcome studyKeep in mindOfficial instructions establish where a control is and the access route Microsoft documents. This guide follows the Teams Free desktop route with a personal Microsoft account, a working camera and an installed, supported app. Microsoft’s product FAQ says Teams for home can be used without a subscription. The background-help page lists effect hardware requirements of at least 2 GB RAM and a dual-core processor from 2018 or later; these do not replace the app’s own installation requirements. Confirm that Video effects is available on your device.
What this could change for you
Try the setting before an ordinary call, while you still have time to change your mind. Put the camera where you will use it and look at the whole frame. If there is something you cannot risk showing, move it out of view first. A background effect should not be your only way to keep a private document or personal detail off camera.
In the Teams Free desktop app, find your meeting in Meet and choose Join to reach the pre-join screen. With the camera on, open Video effects and select Blur. Inspect the preview before choosing Join now. Microsoft also documents None to remove the effect, so this can be a reversible choice rather than a commitment for every call.
Our suggested check is deliberately simple: turn your head, move a hand and lean back while watching the preview. Notice whether the result looks acceptable to you. This is an editorial suggestion, not a procedure we performed or a published accuracy test. If the effect is distracting or unavailable, a different camera angle or a plain physical backdrop may serve the same everyday purpose.
Try it yourself
Check your background before joining
A personal Microsoft account using Teams Free on a supported desktop app, a working camera, internet access and available Video effects. Microsoft lists at least 2 GB RAM and a dual-core processor from 2018 or later for backgrounds and AR filters; also meet current app installation requirements. Teams for home does not require a subscription. Universal regional or managed-account availability is not assumed.
- Move anything sensitive out of camera view, open Meet in Teams Free, and choose Join for the meeting to reach the pre-join screen.
- Turn on the camera, select Video effects and choose Blur; inspect the preview before joining.
- Choose Join now if the view suits you, or select None to remove the effect.
What to watch for: Check the whole camera view and keep sensitive material out of frame. This is a suggested activity based on official documentation, not a firsthand test or privacy guarantee.

What it does not prove
Official instructions establish where a control is and the access route Microsoft documents. They do not establish an independent improvement in attention, meeting quality or privacy. We have not tested Teams background blur firsthand.
Do not treat a blurred preview as proof that every background detail will stay hidden throughout a call. Keep sensitive material out of view regardless of the setting; this guide is about appearance, not secure concealment.
The desktop controls described here do not promise identical menus in mobile, web, workplace-managed or school versions. Hardware and app support matter. The cited Free guide does not establish a universal country-by-country entitlement, so check the option in your own app before relying on it.
